Next stop Japan!
After a hectic holiday season we'll soon be off to Japan for a little winter birding. We'll have 4 days in Tokyo to see the city sights and adjust to Asian time before we meet up with our small birding group. Heading out into the countryside in search of Japan's avifauna, we'll eventually visit all 3 major islands. Along with amazing birds, I'll be on the lookout for unusual textiles, handmade paper, and designs that reflect Japan and it's fascinating culture. Stay tuned!
A voice from the past
I believe there exists a collective artistic consciousness available to all of us. Nowhere is this more evident than in traditional societies around the world where art is everywhere and everyone is an artist. To honor the aesthetic of traditional Yup’ik design, I created a motif similar to what might...
Rarities and ivory
I've recently returned from a successful trip to Gambell (St Lawrence Island) - the outermost fringe of western Alaska, where you really CAN see Russia, less than 40 miles away! What brings me back is the unique opportunity to live in a Yup'ik village for a few weeks - and of course the birds. This spring it was Common (Siberian) Chiffchaff, one of only a handful of North American records, Terek Sandpiper and Eyebrowed Thrush, to name just 3 of the amazing list of...
Off again to Gambell, AK, a wonderfully remote outpost in the Bering Sea – closer to Russia than mainland USA! Besides documenting rare Asian birds, I source amazing finds in petrified whalebone and fossilized ivory from the resident Yup'ik carvers that I then use in one-of-a-kind pieces. Stay tuned for more on this upcoming adventure!
